Kirkland's 'Guns For Gift Cards' Exchange Happens Saturday

This weekend, and again in July, neighbors will be able to exchange unwanted firearms for gift cards worth up to $250.

KIRKLAND, WA โ€” Kirkland residents have a chance this weekend to anonymously turn in unwanted firearms for payment as part of the city's effort to reduce gun violence. The Kirkland Police Department's "Guns for Gift Cards" program gets underway Saturday morning at the Kirkland Justice Center.

"Kirkland experienced six gun-related suicides since 2020," said Kirkland Deputy Mayor Jay Arnold earlier this month. "Encouraging community members to voluntarily relinquish ownership of unwanted guns is one step we can take to help reduce the likelihood of accidental injuries and suicides by firearms."

Residents interested in participating do not need to register in advance but will need to bring proof they live in Kirkland, like a recent utility bill. Officers will visually verify the address and officials said no identifying details will be noted down or stored. Participants will receive preloaded Visa gift cards, valued between $25 and $250, depending on the type of gun:

  • Obvious non-working firearms and pellet guns: $25
  • Bolt-action rifles and shotguns: $100
  • Handguns: $200
  • Rifles (AR or AK style rifles): $250

The city asks visitors to stay in their cars and keep the unloaded weapons in the trunk or backseat of their vehicles. Those who cannot make it this month will have another chance to participate in July.
