Kirkland's Juanita Beach Reopens For Swimming

Following a two-week closure from bacteria, the city invited swimmers back to Juanita Beach Park on Wednesday.

KIRKLAND, WA โ€” Public health officials signed off on reopening Juanita Beach to swimmers Wednesday, two weeks after routine tests detected elevated bacteria levels in the water. Public Health - Seattle & King County closed the beach amid the heat wave in late July and returned to the beach each week until bacteria levels returned to the acceptable range.

Kirkland officials said water quality experts returned to the beach Monday and notified the city Tuesday that the water was safe for swimmers and pets to return. Lifeguards returned to duty at noon Wednesday, and King County crews will return to the beach each week to take new samples and ensure safety.

Several other beaches around Lake Washington remain closed due to elevated bacteria levels, including Renton's Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, and Bellevue's Meydenbauer Bay and Newcastle beaches.
