Son of Hit-and-Run Victim Says 'Cherish Time With Your Mom'

Eric Pieczatkowski says on Mother's Day he will celebrate the life of his mom, Kirkland native Lucy Pieczatkowski, killed early on New Year's Day by a hit-and-run driver outside North Bend.

The son of Kirkland native Lucinda โ€˜Lucyโ€™ Pieczatkowski -- killed early on New Yearsโ€™ Day by a hit-and-run driver -- says he will celebrate his motherโ€™s life on Sunday, his first Motherโ€™s Day without her.

"It's going to be an important day," Erik Pieczatkowski, 32, told KIRO Radio. "I don't think it's going to be a sad day for me. I think it's going to be a day of celebration."

Lucy Pieczatkowski was 57 and walking to her North Bend home after celebrating New Yearโ€™s Eve when she was hit by a pickup truck outside of town. She was a 1974 graduate of Lake Washington High in Kirkland.

King County Sheriffโ€™s deputies located the truck that hit her soon after the incident and have .

Eric Pieczatkowski says he misses a lot about his mom, including her cooking. "I haven't tasted anything better and she did everything from scratch," he told KIRO.

He and family member will celebrate Motherโ€™s Day as he did with his mom each year, with a trip to Emerald Downs. But itโ€™s tough knowing the person who killed his mom will likely be able to celebrate with his or her mother.

โ€œI'm saying that you haven't decided to step up when you've taken someone else's mother away," he said.

His advice for Motherโ€™s Day? "Cherish time with your mom."
