Lakewood Receives $1.4M More To Move Businesses From JBLM: Report
The city is hoping to move 21 businesses that would be in danger if a plane crashed near the base.
LAKEWOOD, WA — Lakewood has received an additional $1.4 million dollars to help the city's effort to evacuate nearly two dozen businesses from the danger zone near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, according to a new report from the News Tribune.
As the tribune explains, 21 businesses are too close to JBLM and at risk of destruction if an airplane crashed near the base.
The City of Lakewood and the Department of Defense have partnered to buy out the land and move the businesses. Under their agreement, Lakewood pays just 20 percent of the cost, the News Tribune reports. The $1.4 million, allotted largely from the Legislature's capitol budget, will go to one of those land purchases, though the city has yet to announce which specific building may be bought out.
