Tacoma Shootings: 1 Injured, Another Shot By Responding Police

A shooting suspect has been hospitalized after he allegedly engaged police in a shootout early Wednesday.

TACOMA, WA β€” Two people are in the hospital after a pair of shootings early Wednesday in Tacoma, one of which involved Tacoma Police officers engaging in a shootout with a suspect.

According to Tacoma Police, the incident started around 7 a.m. when officers received a 911 call reporting sounds of screaming and shots fired somewhere between the 3800 and 4000 blocks of South D Street. Callers told police that a car had fled the scene shortly after the shots were fired, and that a man had been seen armed with a gun nearby.

Officers later discovered that the fleeing car contained a shooting victim. That car ended up taking the victim to a nearby hospital, where they are reportedly in stable condition.

Meanwhile, shortly after officers arrived to search the area, three Tacoma Police officers "engaged gunfire with the suspect" outside a home in the 4000 block of D Street, according to investigators. It's unclear exactly who fired first or what sparked the shooting, but it all ended just minutes after it began, with the suspect shot and officers calling for medical aid.

Police say the suspect is in custody and has been taken to a nearby hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition.
