Police Blotter: Drunk Seattle Teen Rams MIPD Cruiser

The following information from June 4-9 was supplied by the Mercer Island Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Police arrested a 19-year old Seattle teen and detained all four passengers inside the vehicle she was driving June 9 after she collided with a patrol car on Island Crest Way.

According to a police summary of the accident, a Gray Lexus RX330 was attempting to merge out of the center turn lane and into the thru-lane at around 2:17 a.m. near on the 5300 block of Island Crest Way as a police cruiser drove by at the same time. The officer sounded his horn but the Lexus rammed into the front of the patrol car. 

The driver was arrested after she failed several field sobriety tests, and her blood-alcohol levels were later tested at above the legal limit at the.

The passengers — three underage Mercer Island youths, ages 19 and 20, and a 19-year-old Seattle female teen — were later cited for underage drinking, and the car was towed and impounded.

A 42-year-old Bellevue man was arrested on the 7800 SE 27th Street North Mercer Way at 8: 11 p.m. for driving on a suspended license after being stopped for a traffic violation. Police located a syringe after a pat-down, and impounded his 1996 Pontiac Sunfire for a later search at the police station after obtaining a search warrant.

Espresso Express Missing $220 in Overnight Caper

Police questioned three employees of on 78th Avenue SE concerning the theft of approximately $220 in cash from a nightly deposit left at the coffee stand overnight. A 24-year-old employee reportedly discovered the alleged theft at 9 a.m. and said the door of the business was open when she arrived for work. Two other 19-year old girls from Kirkland and Mercer Island were asked about the theft in the case.

June 7

Violent Teenage Boy Committed to Mental Health Facility

A 48-year-old resident of a home on the 2700 block of 68th Avenue SE told police her 15-year-old son flew into a rage at around 11 p.m. and hit and pushed his 13-year-old sister and shoved her. The woman said she feared for the safety of herself and her daughter and said her son has a history of aggressive behavior and it is getting worse. Police determined the teen had kicked-in a bedroom door, smashing it into a door jamb, and tried to prevent his mother from calling police by grabbing her phone. He was arrested and involuntarily committed to Children's Hospital in Seattle for a mental health evaluation.

Graffiti Teens Caught Spray-Paint Handed

Two witnesses reported seeing two teenagers spray-painting on a retaining wall of the West Wing Apartments on the 3000 block of Island Crest Way at around 1 a.m. Police suspected two 13-year-old boys in a nearby park were involved in the mischief after officers noticed they had paint on their hands that matched the color of the spray-paint graffiti. They were found to be carrying 3 cans of spray paint, a roll of purple tape and a replica Sig Sauer P226 pistol pellet gun. The materials were retained as evidence. The teens were later released to their parents.

Rain-Slicked Island Crest Way Contributes to Multi-Vehicle Collision at Crosswalk

A 37-year-old Mercer Island man driving an Acura 32 TL driving northbound on Island Crest Way at 7:25 a.m. was rear-ended in a multi-vehicle collision after he stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian. A 25-year-old Monroe man driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck failed to stop in time — possibly due to the wet roadway conditions as noted in the report and grade of Gallagher Hill's decent — and rammed into the back a Mercedes-Benz SUV, which then collided with the Acura. No injuries were reported in the collision.
