SWAT Team Called To Armed Burglary In Spanaway

SPANAWAY, WA — Crisis responders resolved a brief standoff in Spanaway early Tuesday afternoon.

UPDATE: The suspect has been arrested, no injuries have been reported and law enforcement is reopening the surrounding neighborhood.

Midday Tuesday, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department confirmed that their deputies had been called to an armed burglary in progress at a home on 5th Ave E in Spanaway, just across the street from Thompson Elementary and Spanaway Middle School.

Deputies say when they arrived, the suspect was still in the home. They claim the suspect had broken in, and that when deputies first made contact the suspect aimed a rifle in their direction.

The SWAT team was called in to resolve the issue and Thompson Elementary and Spanaway Middle School have both been placed in lockdown.

However, shortly after sounding the alarm, deputies confirmed that the suspect had been taken into custody. They say crisis responders managed to talk the suspect into peacefully surrendering, and that no shots were fired, and no one was injured.

Not much else is known right now, though deputies say they believe the suspect is related to the homeowner in some capacity.
