The City of Redmond has received a 2012 Planning award for outstanding contributions to the field of planning and zoning implementation.
The award was presented to the Redmond City Council Jan. 29 by The American Planning Association, Washington Chapter and the Planning Association of Washington. It honors the City for its implementation of the Downtown Zoning Regulations and design standards adopted in 1993.
Those regulations are aimed at transforming the sprawling auto-oriented downtown into a more vibrant, dense, pedestrian-friendly and transit supportive urban center. Since 1993, private and public development has begun to transform the downtown into a more vibrant, walkable urban center.
Some of the things sited in the award were the City’s innovative solutions to planning issues and problems, as the entire downtown planning effort and zoning implementation solution is about patience and persistence; sticking to the Downtown vision; and keeping with the prescribed zoning and design standards over time.
