City to Close Cleveland Street for Tree Trimming on Saturday

Diseased elm trees near the historic on Cleveland Street have prompted city officials to close a portion of the road this Saturday morning for "major tree trimming."

The roadway will be closed from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, between 161st Avenue Northeast and Leary Way. Detours will be in place, and parking will also be restricted in the immediate vicinity.

According to a city news release, the trees are at least 100 years old and were "severely topped" several decades ago, causing them to develop Dutch elm disease and internal rotting of their trunks and limbs. The trees overhang the sidewalk, driveway and street and have become hazardous, the release states.

Because of their poor condition, the city plans to consider fully removing the trees sometime in the future. More information is available on the city's website.
