REDMOND, WA — Neighbors are welcome to celebrate the official groundbreaking for the new Redmond Senior & Community Center in early June, a sprawling new facility that will offer arts, events, and recreational options for residents of all ages.

Mayor Angela Birney and other city officials will host a ceremony on Thursday, June 2, at the construction site, located at the site of the former Redmond Senior Center on the Municipal Campus. Officials began researching the project in 2020 and determined the city needed a larger community center to better serve its senior population and the community at large.

According to the city, the new, $48 million facility will encompass 52,000 square feet, with a layout accommodating a lounge and library for seniors, a multipurpose community room and community kitchen, recreation areas, a gym, locker rooms, a meeting space and a classroom. Children will also have access to a new, supervised "Kid Zone."

"This is an exciting and important milestone for our community," Birney said in a statement. "The Redmond Senior & Community Center will be a place for everyone to feel welcome and included and connect with others. This project demonstrates what we can achieve when we work together to enhance the wellness and vitality of our community."

The project is scheduled to open in late 2023 and was designed with energy conservation in mind, including rooftop solar panels that will cover half of the building's electrical needs.
