New Statistics Show Widespread Crime Decrease in 2011

The department has released statistics showing a 13 percent decrease in property crimes compared to 2010.

New statistics released Friday by the  show a widespread decrease in property crimes last year.

Property crimes, which include burglary and car prowls, decreased by 13 percent from 2010 to 2011. The most common property crime was car prowls, which went down from 684 in 2010 to 554 last year. Burglaries also decreased from 198 in 2010 to 157 in 2011.

Rates for violent crimes, such as rape and robbery, also declined in 2011 (see table below). Calls for service fell from 25,167 in 2010 to 23,369 last year.

In a department news release, Police Chief attributed the decline to the work of neighborhood watch groups, strong recreation programs for youth, and residents' involvement and sense of pride in their community.

“I am proud of the professional and dedicated work by all Redmond Police Department personnel this past year," Gibson said in the release. "Many factors contribute to maintaining the safety of citizens.”
