Redmond Star Student Launched A Tutoring Non-Profit Organization
This star student is looking forward to a world where students will have easy access to education and be motivated to excel. Meet Johan!

Redmond, WA— Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?
The following are some of the Johan's achievements:
1. Two-time VEX robotics worlds championship participant: He won the Judges award in both competitions.
2. In the past two years, he volunteered at a local middle school to mentor the middle school kids with their robotics club. He has mentored over 80 teams. Out of which, a total of 35 teams qualified for the state championship. And 15 teams qualified for the Vex worlds.
3. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge. During COVID-19, he learned from the news and some of his family friends that some students need additional help with their homework. During his 9th grade, he provided online support to some of his family friends' kids. In his Sophomore year, he started a 501c3 nonprofit organization to reach a broader audience. Through his non-profit organization, he reached out to other non-profit organizations that work with younger kids. In the past two years, his organization has provided over 250 hours of tutoring for close to 50 students. Single-handedly, he has tutored over 130 hours in the last 1.5 years. He is working on adding more tutors.
4. In addition to the tutoring, his nonprofit organization raised $4750 for Roots Young Adults Shelter in Seattle. This year he is working towards raising 3000 lbs of food for local food centers.
5. He is the president of the Rocket Club at his school. He leads two teams as a team captain to participate in The American Rocketry Challenge.
6. His team is now one of the Top 100 teams out of the 800 teams in the country to qualify for the Rocketry launch Finals. This May, he will take his team to The Plains, VA, to compete with the top 100 teams.
7. He is the president of the Chess club at this school, where is lead a team of 60 other chess enthusiasts.
8. He researched to determine the "Optimal Leg Height of Landing Legs to Reduce Risk of Damage from Regolith Ejecta by Retrorocket Exhausts". This research won the "US Air Force Award" at Central Sound Science Fair. The study also won 1st place Trophy at Washington State Science Fair
10. He and his team also won 1st place at the regional Envirothon (largest outdoor environmental science competition in the United States and Canada for high school students). The team now moves to the state competition.
11. He also won the regional FBLA competition for 2 events. Business Calculation, Risk and Insurance Management

He is looking forward to a world where elementary, middle, and high school students would have easy access to education and be motivated to excel in their education and dream big
