Spiritbrook Park Gets $2-Million Facelift

Redmond's Spiritbrook Park is looking a bit more inviting—and dry—these days after a $2-million renovation project that added a new playground, picnic shelter and drainage system to the facility.

The City of Redmond will celebrate the park's re-opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26. Spiritbrook is located at 6500 151st Ave. NE.

Senior Park Planner B Sanders said the upgrades were sorely needed at the 2-acre park, originally built in 1974.

”Everything was just really dated and not functioning properly anymore,” she said.

Of particular concern were the park's wetland and flooding problems on its play field, which Sanders said lacked proper drainage and was constantly wet. The city's parks and recreation and public works departments collaborated to develop a completely new drainage system for the park and also provide proper designation for the wetland, Sanders said.

The result is a new and larger play structure, pickle-ball court, basketball hoop, picnic shelter and loop trail. Sanders said several of the park's features—including the walking path and shelter—were a direct result of neighbors' requests for the new facility.

About half the park has been open for the last month or so, and Sanders said the city expects to open the play field a day or two before the ribbon-cutting.
