Update: 14-year-old Maple Valley Boy Injured in Sammamish Car vs. Pedestrian Accident

Update, 5:15 p.m.: According to reports, though emergency workers originally planned to airlift the boy to the hospital, after determining that his injuries were not life-threatening, a Maple Valley teen hit by a car was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

A 14-year-old Maple Valley boy was sustained serious injuries, including a possible arm fracture, after allegedly jaywalking across the busy 228th Street thoroughfare in front of the Sammamish Skate Park Friday afternoon, July 6.

Witnesses said boy, Cole Stever, 14, was awake and talking to paramedics after the accident, which happened around 3 p.m. Eastside Fire & Rescue workers moved the boy to Skyline High School to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, but ultimately was transported by ambulance, according to reports.

Sammamish resident Jared Stever, 14, said he and his cousin Cole, also 14, were on their way from the Sammamish Skate Park over to Skyline High School. Jared Stever said his cousin decided "it would be a great idea" to cross 228th by the skate park rather than head down to the traffic light.

Then, when he apparently misjudged the speed of an approaching car, Jared Stever said it looked like he tried to outrun it but was struck and thrown about 10 feet, smashing the drivers side front windshield of the oncoming car, a silver sedan.

Police at the scene told the driver of the car, who declined to give his name to Patch, that the boy had admitted he was jaywalking.

The driver said he feels sorry for Stever and hopes he will be ok. He said he was traveling southbound in the lefthand lane of 228th when the boy rushed in front of his car.

"It's like he dove toward the median. I stopped so I didn't push him along," he said. He felt the glass come crashing into the car.

Cole Stever's parents were notified, and his father arrived at the scene before the boy was moved to Harborview.
