Elizabeth Blackwell Elementary Raises $3,000 to Fight Cancer

Elizabeth Blackwell Elementary students joined in the fight against cancer by raising money and walking the Blackwell playground on March 26. The students at Blackwell were holding a Relay Recess event, an abbreviated version of the American Cancer Society’s national signature activity, Relay For Life.  

The Relay Recess program provides cancer prevention and education information and also raises funds for the American Cancer Society to help create a world with more birthdays. For two weeks prior to the event, Blackwell students are took part in “Penny Wars.”

They reached into their own piggy banks to stuff their classroom collection jars with pennies. During this time period Blackwell students were also encouraged to wear purple, the official color of the American Cancer Society and Relay Recess.

In their PE classes, Mr. Hutchison educated students about ways to stay healthy and minimize their own cancer risks. Each class also ran laps to stay active and promote the message of keeping your body healthy.

The classes with the most participation through fundraising and spirit challenges got the opportunity to turn their principal, Mike Anderson, into a giant human whipped cream sundae at the Relay Recess culminating event.

The Blackwell Relay Recess event raised almost $3,000 for the American Cancer Society.
