The Issaquah School Board held a regular meeting Monday, Nov. 15 at the Issaquah School District Administration Building. The meeting was broadcast live on the ISD YouTube channel, and a recording of the meetingΒ is available.

Prior to the regular board meeting, the Board conducted a workΒ studyΒ aboutΒ School Security Supports and a debriefΒ discussion aboutΒ Board-Teacher ListeningΒ Sessions.Β Β

In the first conversation, representatives fromΒ the Sammamish Police Department, City of Sammamish MayorΒ Karen MoranΒ and the BoardΒ discussed the current partnership between theΒ Issaquah School District’sΒ SchoolΒ Resource OfficerΒ programΒ andΒ the City of Sammamish.Β Β 

DuringΒ the second conversation,Β theΒ BoardΒ shared what they heard duringΒ threeΒ secondaryΒ TeacherΒ Listening Sessions. Board members saidΒ keyΒ themes that teachers addressed includedΒ equity, social-emotionalΒ learningΒ andΒ otherΒ topics of interest.Β AfterΒ the upcomingΒ sessions with our elementaryΒ teachers,Β the Board plans to develop a plan includingΒ nextΒ steps.Β 

Gibson EkΒ freshmanΒ Havah Alcorn thanked the Board for the opportunity to speakΒ on behalf of her fellow students. Alcorn shared:Β 

Internships play a vital role in education at Gibson Ek. She has enjoyed learning about a potential career as a teacher.Β Β 

The school’s makerspacesΒ provideΒ critical opportunities for student learning. Alcorn noted that students have access to the full Adobe Suite, but that they wouldΒ benefitΒ from more powerful computers.Β 

Since her first day at Gibson Ek, she has appreciated how inclusive it is, and the way students are encouraged to be kind community-builders.Β

SuperintendentΒ RonΒ Thiele updated the Board on the 2021-22 school year.Β HighlightsΒ include:Β Β 

We successfullyΒ hostedΒ aΒ COVID-19Β Vaccine ClinicΒ in partnership with CostcoΒ PharmaciesΒ last week.Β Costco pharmacists administeredΒ 1,673Β first dosesΒ of the Pfizer vaccineΒ to our students.Β Β 

Recovery efforts:Β We have now been back in school for more thanΒ 50 days, and we areΒ beginning to receiveΒ someΒ helpfulΒ data about students to aid in recoveryΒ efforts. Throughout the district, weΒ are seeing improved student behaviors as we reinforce expectations for studentsΒ andΒ provideΒ neededΒ supports.Β Β 

StudentsΒ inΒ grades 6, 8, 10 and 12Β recentlyΒ participatedΒ in theΒ Healthy Youth Survey. Data from the survey isΒ used toΒ helpΒ planΒ programsΒ thatΒ support our youth and reduce their risks.Β In addition,Β assessments includingΒ iReady and the first-ever fall Smarter Balanced AssessmentΒ haveΒ recently been administered.Β Β 

At the high school level,Β first quarter grades are out;Β middle school trimester grades will be out the first week of December.Β Β 

We are happy to report theΒ lowestΒ count ofΒ COVID-19Β casesΒ within the system this past week sinceΒ our first report during the first weekΒ of school.Β Β

On Nov. 9, 2021,Β Superintendent Thiele announcedΒ that he will retire at the end of the 2021-2022 school year.Β Board President Suzanne Weaver began by sharing that Thiele has been a strong collaborator with the Board andΒ that they have beenΒ delighted by his focus on a β€œCulture of Kindness,” among other accomplishments.Β Β 

WeaverΒ ledΒ aΒ discussion aboutΒ theΒ process to selectΒ the next superintendentΒ for our district,Β includingΒ potentialΒ searchΒ firms, listening sessionsΒ with ourΒ communityΒ andΒ determiningΒ next steps as a Board.Β Β

The Board discussedΒ GP-5Β as it pertains toΒ ISDΒ Regulation 4220P.Β Regulation 4220PΒ concernsΒ a narrow band of complaints regarding staff.Β While Board actionΒ wasΒ notΒ required,Β theΒ conversationΒ generated furtherΒ clarityΒ around the role of the Board, the Director of the Board andΒ theΒ SuperintendentΒ moving forward.Β With the Board now removed from the equation,Β the public can appeal to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) ifΒ they do not agree withΒ a decisionΒ madeΒ byΒ the Superintendent.Β

AdjustmentsΒ to theΒ Ends and ELs monitoring calendarΒ wasΒ unanimouslyΒ accepted by the Board.Β Thiele said that adjusting the calendar will be helpful to staff who are compiling and analyzing the needed data.Β The approved changes can be viewedΒ online.Β Β Β

The Board discussedΒ legislative activity pertinent to education, includingΒ theirΒ recentΒ letters toΒ Public Health – Seattle and King County and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.Β Β 

The Board plans to followΒ up with Public Health – Seattle and King County.Β Β 

InΒ aΒ meetingΒ withΒ StateΒ SuperintendentΒ ChrisΒ Reykdal, ReykdalΒ shared thatΒ allΒ additionalΒ Elementary andΒ SecondaryΒ School EmergencyΒ ReliefΒ (ESSER)Β FundsΒ haveΒ beenΒ pre-allocatedΒ to other districts andΒ community-basedΒ organizations. NoΒ additionalΒ funds will beΒ allocatedΒ to the students ofΒ Issaquah School District.Β Β Β
