Mercer Island Police Detective Accidentally Shoots Self in Buttocks

A seven-year veteran with the Mercer Island Police Department was injured by his own weapon on Thursday after handcuffing a narcotics suspect in Shoreline.

This unfortunate incident is something like adding embarrassment to injury for a Mercer Island Police officer.

A Mercer Island Police detective was taken to Harborview Medical Center after accidentially shooting himself in the buttocks while on duty Thursday morning.

The unidentified narcotics detective had just served a warrant and made an arrest on the 19200 block of Stone Way North in Shoreline and was reholsering his gun when the weapon discharged at 10 a.m.

He was immediately transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where the gunshot wound was described as a minor injury.

"He is doing fine," said MIPD Commander Lesie Burns. "If anything, his pride is damaged as much as his buttock."

The detective was working on assignment with the Eastside Narcotics Task Force, and is a seven-year veteran with the Mercer Island Police Department.
