Ribbon Cutting Wednesday Night for New Eastlake Sports Field

The $1.9-million project added lights and new astroturf to Eastlake's only dedicated baseball field. It is available for both community and student use.

The City of Sammamish and Lake Washington School District will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, to celebrate the completion of extensive renovations to the Eastlake High School baseball field.

The $1.9-million project was approved by the City of Sammamish in late 2011 and includedΒ replacing the field with astroturf and adding lighting. In exchange for the city's support, residents will have access to the field for community uses.

City spokesman Tim Larson said the field is designed to accommodate baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and football.Β

When it was approved, the project was met with some backlash from community baseball organizations that were not pleased the field would be used for other sports. But the city has said it is committed to working with baseball groups to ensure their design and scheduling needs are met as much as possible.

The ribbon cutting takes place from 5 to 5:30 p.m. before a 6 p.m. Eastlake varsity baseball game against Snohomish. The ceremony will include remarks by Deputy MayorΒ Ramiro Valderrama-Aramayo and LWSD Superintendent Traci Pierce.
