Falling on the last Monday of May each year, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while serving in the military. It's a federal holiday that many people get off from work, resulting in a three-day weekend.

This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27, and for many, this holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. We've rounded up some things to do Memorial Day Weekend in and around Sammamish-Issaquah. Please note: We recommend calling ahead to confirm the hours and access before you head out the door.


Northwest Folklife Festival

When: Friday, May 24-Monday, May 27 - 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. (closes 10:00 p.m. select dates)
Where: Seattle Center, 305 Harrison St., Seattle, WA 98109
What: The annual Northwest Folklife Festival returns to the nearby Seattle Center over Memorial Day weekend, celebrating the arts, culture and heritage of the greater Pacific Northwest. Though there is no entry fee, donations are accepted and appreciated, with a suggested donation fee of $20 per day of attendance.

Once On This Island

When: Friday, May 24 - 8:00 p.m., Saturday, May 25 - 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 26 - 2:00 p.m.
Where: Francis J. Gaudette Theatre, 303 Front St. N, Issaquah, WA 98027
What: Village Theatre presents its rendition of Once On This Island, a Calypso-flavored musical adaptation of the classic fairytale The Little Mermaid. The show will run in Issaquah through Jun. 16; tickets are available for purchase here.

Issaquah Farmers Market

When: Saturday, May 25 - 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Where: Pickering Barn, 1730 10th Ave. NW, Issaquah, WA 98027
What: Swing by the Issaquah Farmers Market for fresh produce and wares from local artisans. The market is open every Saturday from May through September, rain or shine.

Volunteering: Memorial Day At Lower Commons Park

When: Monday, May 27 - 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Where: Lower Commons Park, 550 222nd Pl. SE, Sammamish, WA 98075
What: The City of Sammamish is seeking volunteers to restore the habitat at Lower Commons Park. As part of the event, attendees will observe a moment of service in honor of fallen veterans. Registration is required; gloves, tools, water and snacks will be provided.
