City Proclamation In Support Of The Islamic Center Of Tacoma

City of University Place officials are working closely with federal, state and other local officials, including the University Place Police Department, to investigate a suspicious fire at the Islamic Center of Tacoma (2010 Bridgeport Way W.) on Oct. 11, 2021. The blaze may be an act of arson.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire that began on the roof, but the building suffered extensive smoke and water damage. As a result, services at the mosque have been paused and members are seeking other locations for worship until repairs are made.

At the Oct. 18, 2021 University Place City Council meeting, Mayor Caroline Belleci read a proclamation that expressed U.P.’s strong support for our local Islamic community and the right of all citizens to practice their faiths openly and freely, without threat of violence.

"We understand that our community is upset about this incident that has hit so close to home, and rightly so," said U.P. Police Chief Greg Premo. "While we believe this is an isolated incident, we are working diligently to track down every lead so we can seek justice on behalf of the Islamic Center of Tacoma and all citizens who cherish the right to worship freely and without fear of hate or intolerance."

A LaunchGood campaign is underway to raise funds to help rebuild the mosque and has currently raised more than $280,000.
