Tacoma Will Be Site Of Saturday's South Sound Sustainability Expo

The free event at the UW Tacoma Campus will offer family fun and spotlight local environmental sustainability organizations.

TACOMA, WA —The 14th Annual South Sound Sustainability Expo will take place this weekend, offering family fun and spotlighting environmental sustainability organizations from around the region.

The free expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the UW Tacoma Campus and Tollefson Plaza, located at 1700 Commerce. This year's event, which is sponsored by the City of Tacoma's Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability, features a an all-new outdoor space.

The expo, which is expected to have over 80 vendors, will be focused on imagining a more sustainable, resilient and "Better Tacoma 2030," according to organizers. In fact, the event will celebrate the new 2030 Climate Action Plan, which details Tacoma's vision for a future grounded in sustainability.

According to organizers, the expo also will connect residents and businesses with services, products, companies and agencies that address sustainability needs in the community.

Meanwhile, attendees will be able to explore a variety of sustainable living topics and discover actions everybody can take into their daily lives to have a positive impact on the environment.

The expo also gives families a chance to participate in interactive kids activities and enjoy local art displays, while also connecting with experts on a range of topics.

Among the featured family activities at the Sustainability Expo are:

  • Kids Corner: Representatives from the Tacoma Nature Center will help children with a seed planting activity using reused and recycled materials.
  • Pop-Up Forest: The city of Tacoma's Urban Forestry Team will show guests what an urban and built environment would look and feel like with more trees.
  • Mending Station: Guests are invited to bring their clothing and textiles that are in need of minor repairs, and a skilled team of "fixers" will be available to get the garments look as good as new.
  • Live Music and Performance: Local and regional artists and musicians will showcase environmentally-inspired art.
