Honoring Coach Steve Case: Family And Friends Set Up Scholarship Fund

Steve Case was one of those super-dynamic people that touched everyone’s life.

He was a coach and teacher at Washington Park High School for 33 years, who retired in 1999. He coached football and wrestling at Park and wrestling at Horlick High School. He also taught French and German at several schools in the district.

After Case retired, he started sailing competitively and on October 12 he was finishing the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race off the Virginia coast when he fell off the boat and drowned.

Now, his family and students are starting a scholarship in his name.

Tressa Stein, one of his students, said she met Case at Mitchell Middle School.

“He recognized something in me,” she said. “I was in drama and choir, but he knew I didn’t want go home after school.”

Case put Stein to work helping out during the football games with equipment and then eventually with athletic training even two years after graduation.

“He kept me grounded and he taught me, ‘Life is great and there’s always something better out there,’” she said.

A scholarship fund is being started in Case’s name for students with excellent academics and who excel in sports.

“He was also more interested in team sportsmanship than winning,” Stein said.

A reception will be held for former players and alumni from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Park High School, 1901 12th St., in the library. Following the reception, a ceremony will be held before the wrestling meet, which will be held in the wrestling gym.
