The Ironman Racine triathlon is off and running with no traffic issues or accidents to report this morning according to race officials.

"It's going wonderfully and just as scripted," said Kari Dawson,  the volunteer director for the Ironman Racine competition and sports director for Real Racine. "We have had no reports of major traffic issues or anything of that sort. So far we are exactly where we should be."

If individuals are planning to go out and watch the race, they should be prepared for a hot day. Wear plenty of sun screen, a hat and bring an umbrella or tent to sit under, according to race officials.

"It is hot out here and there's very little coverage in the shade," Dawson said. "Bring a blanket to sit on because it's so dry, the ground is not real soft."

Temperatures are to reach into the 80s near the lake and into the 90s away from the lake with not much breeze this afternoon.

7 am: Triathletes hit the water

The more than 2,000 triathletes registered for the Ironman have hit the water. After swimming the 1.2 miles from Zoo Beach to North Beach, they will take to their bike and head out into the county for hours of bicycling.

The course runs through Racine, Caledonia, Raymond, Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant. from Patch's earlier coverage.

We will be posting updates thorughout the day, particularly if we hear of any course issues that may impact traffic.
