Milwaukee Foodie News: Jose's Blue Sombrero Opens 3rd Location

Popular Mexican restaurant's opening in the North Shore and a new retro diner top this week's "foodie news" column.

Jose's Blue Sombrero Opening on North Shore

You'll have another option for Mexican food starting this week as Jose's Blue Sombrero will open at the RiverPoint Village Shopping Center at Brown Deer and Port Washington roads in Fox Point. Jose's is a popular Mexican cantina chain with locations in Brookfield and Racine. The building at Port Washington Road, just off of I-43, was previously home to an Outback Steakhouse. The new location will have a different look than the other two in the Milwaukee area. Among the differences is a large "salsa garden," which will grow herbs, vegetables and other ingredients that will be incorporated into the salsa and other dishes. The Diner Has a Retro Feel

Not too far from Jose's, is a new restaurant called The Diner, a 1950s-style eatery featuring food from that era as well as southern fare, the Journal Sentinel reports. Located at 4191 N. Green Bay Road in the old Lyle’s Sandwich Shop location, The Diner features home-style cooking and breakfast served all day, including pulled pork hash with two eggs and banana caramel waffles, the newspaper says. The menu of the restaurant, which opened Saturday, also includes gumbo on Saturdays and shrimp and grits. Read more on JSOnline.

Downtown's Largest Farmers' Market Open for the Season

The Westown Farmers' Market, the oldest and largest open-air market in downtown Milwaukee, has opened for the season. The market, located at Zeidler Union Square at Michigan and North 3rd streets, will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays through Oct. 30. The market features more than 60 vendors selling seasonal Wisconsin grown produce as it becomes available throughout the season.  New vendors this year include: BunMe (Vietnamese inspired sandwiches), Fast Foodie (known for their signature Globaco),  The Grist Mill (an East Troy restaurant serving grilled items), Verduras Tea House & Café (coffee, tea, cookies, breads) and Alice’s Garden (a community garden in Milwaukee).  For a list of all vendors expected at this year’s market, visit the market's website.

Bay View Bar Reopens After Remodeling

The Palomino Bar, which has been closed since April for remodeling, is reopening this week and will have a renovated dinner room, improved kitchen and big changes to the menu, the Journal Sentinel reports. The bar at 2491 S. Superior St. features a new menu that looks meatier but still has vegetarian/vegan options, according to the Journal Sentinel's Carol Deptolla. Entrées include smoked beef brisket with chimichurri, smoked duck with rhubarb mustard, a black-eyed pea falafel po’ boy.
