UPDATE: Power Outage May Continue Until Mid-Wednesday

Severe thunderstorm knocks out power to thousands of people west and north of the city.

UPDATE: The lights may not be back on until mid-day Wednesday for some residents. In a statement released Tuesday night, crews have been sent to these areas to restore power.  "We expect to complete all restoration work mid-day tomorrow.   We apologize for this inconvenience."

According to We Energies, thousands of customers were without power in Caledonia and Mount Pleasant shortly before 7 p.m., after strong storms passed through the area late Tuesday afternoon.

The utility company's outage map shows scattered outages throughout the villages, with one large area spanning the communities' boundary accounting for more than 2,300 customers being without power.

Jeff Leanna, who is FEMA and Red Cross trained in emergency assessment, toured the east end of Caledonia and reported the damage area was the smallest he’s ever seen.  Tree damage could be seen primarily on Green Bay Road from about Four Mile to Three Mile Roads.

“It looks like a small micro-burst,” he said.  The area without power was substantially larger. Three large trees fell in Jay and Melissa Warner’s yard in the 4400 block of North Green Bay Road, as shown.  “The deck will need repair, but the house appears OK.  We’ll know when the tree is removed.” Jay said.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Racine County and surrounding areas earlier this evening. The watch has now expired, as has the heat advisory in effect for the afternoon.
