At the Mobil Gas Station that the shooter fled to, he encountered an undercover investigator from the Racine County Sheriff's Office who was just starting his shift, Schmaling said. The shooter approached the undercover investigator and began to shoot at him, Schmaling said.

The undercover investigator and the shooter exchanged gunfire. The shooter died at the scene, and the undercover investigator was hospitalized at Ascension in Racine County.

"There is no doubt in my mind the quick, heroic actions of our investigator saved lives today," Schmaling said.

Schmaling called the event a tragedy at the news conference and asked for the community's prayers for the victim and injured investigator.

The name of the victim, shooter and injured officer have not been released. The motive for the attack is unknown.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers tweeted condolences about the event.

A possible witness of the incident told Fox 6 Now News Station that people ran out of the Pilot Travel Stop yelling mixed statements about an active shooter.
