Over 1,000 Seed Packets Sold for the Tall Corn Contest

Competition will be tough with over 1,000 participants statewide.

People have been flocking over to the so much for the giant seeds to grow the tallest corn stalk, that more seeds had to be shipped from Iowa over the weekend.

The Visitor’s Center had customers waiting at the door on Friday morning after the By the end of the day over 800 packets of the super seeds had been sold for a $1 a piece. On Saturday another 500 packets were sold. In other words, there are probably over a 1,000 gardeners trying to produce the tallest stalk to win the contest.

For those who haven’t gotten their hands on the super seeds, no worries because they are on their way from Iowa. Staff at the Visitor’s Center say that the seeds can be planted till mid-June and will grow nearly 18 feet tall.

A similar contest takes place in Iowa. The winning stalk last year in Iowa measured to 17 feet 9 inch high. The seeds being sold at the Visitor’s Center are the same ones as Iowa’s winning stalk.

The contest is open to anyone in Wisconsin and no entry form required. Contestants will be asked to measure their tallest stalk on October 1, then bring a photo and measured height to the Greendale Visitor Center by October 8. A personal visit to check the stalks of the top contestants will be made to confirm the height and determine the winner.

The winning grower will receive a bushel of prizes now being gathered from Greendale’s 25 shops and dining spots.  Prizes already includes a free dinner for two at restaurant that features corn chowder, corn-fed steaks and corn muffins, a $100 Surprise Basket of kitchen gadgets and cookbooks from the Greendale Visitor Center, and a variety of items from the other specialty shops with a hopper of other prizes to come.

The contest has no growing rules. Growers can apply any tricks, secret fertilizers, purified water, etc.

You might even try a “grow light” to make your crop think the sun never goes down. Or you can head out barefoot in the middle of the night and pour a thumb of your favorite wine, brandy or beer around the roots.
