Board of Public Works Special Meeting to Discuss Solid Waste Disposal

The Board of Public Works will weigh options regarding the authorization a 5-year solid waste collection contract, beginning Jan. 1, 2012, at a special meeting in the Common Council chambers of at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Representatives of three prospective contractors - John's, Waste Management and Veolia, the city's current contractor - will make 10-minute presentations at the meeting, following citizen commentary.

In order for the selected contractor to order new trucks and nearly 20,000 containers, and to begin educating Greenfield property owners on the details of changes to come in 2012, the city needs to make a final decision before the end of September, according to supporting documents of tonight's agenda.

The expected annual cost of the contract will exceed $1 million, regardless of the contractor.

The board will make a recommendation based on the presentations and then take that recommendation to the Common Council, presumably at the Aug. 16 meeting.
