Fraudsters Tried Passing Fake $100 Bills At 8 Greenfield Stores

GREENFIELD, WI — Authorities in Greenfield say two people from Chicago tried passing fake $100 bills in a shopping spree that spread around Greenfield in late January.

Police say Melanie Doyle, 19, and Shondale Smith, 23, both of Chicago, were responsible. Both face multiple felony counts of forgery.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County, Greenfield police officers were first sent to Daddy Yo's Frozen Yogurt in Greenfield on the night of Jan. 22 on a report that the two tried paying for frozen yogurt with a counterfeit $100 bill.

Police said the two went from store-to-store, in their shopping spree. According to the criminal complaint, after receiving several tips from store managers across the area, officers caught up with the two outside Marshall's in Greenfield.

Police said they found 38 counterfeit $100 bills - all with identical serial numbers on Smith. They were located in Smith's right boot, police said. Police also said Doyle had two fake $100 bills in her purse.
