GREENFIELD, WI— This year the 20-foot-tall Christmas tree inside Greenfield City Hall isn’t shrouded in traditional white lights.

The City of Greenfield opted to do something special to honor first responders and essential workers amid the pandemic.

The massive tree is adorned with roughly 1600 LED blue lights thanks to an idea from the team at Parks and Recreation and the efforts of the Public Works team who erected the tree.

The idea was sparked by the #LightItBlue movement that started earlier this year to support essential workers like first responders and nurses who were working extra hard during the pandemic.

Earlier this year, the City also changed lights around City Hall and the Police Department as part of the movement.

Lighting the tree blue was an effort at rekindling the way to show widespread support for first responders and essential workers, Scott Jaquish, Parks & Recreation Director, explained

The artificial tree was erected by the Public Works employees just before Thanksgiving, and it was officially turned on over the weekend.

“I thought it was a great gesture to recognize those who are confronted with the challenges and risks helping us all out during these very trying times, and it looks really good,” Mayor Mike Neitzke told Patch after attributing the idea to the team in the Parks and Recreation Department.

The tree will remain up until after the first week in January.
