GREENFIELD, WI — A 61-year-old Greenfield man has been cited for disorderly conduct after police say he blocked a woman from using an elevator because she wasn't wearing a mask in the hallway of the apartment where they both lived.

According to Greenfield police reports, officers were sent to an apartment complex in the 9000 block of W. Sura Lane on Aug. 24 after a 38-year-old Greenfield woman called police, saying she was confronted in the apartment's elevator by a 61-year-old man who took exception to her not wearing a face mask.

According to police reports, the woman was waiting to take the elevator down to the first floor when the elevator door opened with the man standing in the elevator car.

Police said the man questioned why the woman wasn't wearing a mask. When she did not speak to the man, he put his arm across the open elevator door and prevented the door from closing as he continued to question her, police said.

According to police, the woman managed to walk past the man and called police.

When Greenfield police arrived, the woman told officers she felt threatened by the man. When they questioned the man, he told officers he insisted that she wear a mask during their confrontation, according to reports.

Police reportedly told the man that the woman did not need to wear a mask and there was no requirement that she wear one in that setting.

Greenfield police told the man that he should not have stood in the doorway to prevent the woman from using the elevator. Police later mailed a citation for disorderly conduct to the man.
