Officials Address Greenfield Middle School Graffiti Rumors

Greenfield School District officials said rumors spread on social media over a graffiti incident that happened at Greenfield Middle School.

GREENFIELD, WI — School officials in Greenfield have responded to a report of graffiti in one of the Greenfield Middle School bathrooms, and police are increasing their presence at the school for the near future, they said.

In a statement, district officials said Greenfield Middle School staff investigated a graffiti incident in one of the school bathrooms. The graffiti did not make any reference to any violence, officials said.

"In the time since, rumors, not based on fact, have escalated and spread through social media. Learning of this spread, the Greenfield Police Department was visibly present at drop off and will continue to have an increased presence in the near future," Superintendent Lisa Elliott said in a statement Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday morning, students were directed to enter the building, go to their lockers, and then were were directed to their first period classrooms as authorities monitored the situation.
Elliott said Principal Brad Iding spoke to the students and staff about the rumors and to assure
everyone that the building is a safe and secure space at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to district officials, the middle school previously scheduled a planned lockdown. It has been canceled.

"In light of the current matter, in concert with the Greenfield Police Department, the planned lockdown will be scheduled on another day," Elliott wrote.
