Omega Restaurant Fixes Violations; Read Full List Here

MILWAUKEE, WI — The Omega Family Restaurant, 3473 S 27th Street, is back open and has fixed a list of health code violations after the City of Milwaukee Health Department cited the restaurant with 26 specific violations in early September.

According to the City of Milwaukee Health Department, inspectors visited Omega on Sept. 9 and found 26 violations. Two days later on Sept. 11, health inspectors again visited Omega. Records show that 14 violations were reported. Then, one day later, on Sept. 12, inspectors conducted a third inspection at Omega - this time finding that all of the violations had been corrected.

According to City of Milwaukee Health Department records, here are each of the 33 violations that were initially found on Sept. 9. Each of these violations has been corrected, according to reports:

1. Several employees were seen not washing hands before or after re-entering into kitchen from coolers/wash areas.

2. An employee was seen handling carrot cake with bare hands.

3. There were several ready-to-eat foods that were uncovered and stored under an uncovered raw steak on a plate in the prep cooler.

4. Several containers of rice, potatoes, chicken, and stuffing were in hot holding unit that was between 80 to 113 degrees.

5. Several food containers on top and inside the prep cooler at the north end of the grill station were held between 43 to 59 degrees. A pan of cooked chicken and a pan of cooked sausages were found being stored between 46 to 50 degrees.

6.Many food containers found through out the kitchen prep cooler and walk-in coolers were not provided with a date mark.

7. A meat tenderizer utensil was found with raw meat on it being stored on the hand washing sink.

8. The restaurant needed to provide menus with an asterisk for foods that are subject to consumer advisory such as steaks, burgers and egg items.

9. No personal thermometers were present and available for use for monitoring temperatures in foods.

10. A deli slicer, can opener, band saw use for cutting meats was visibly soiled.

11. Many food containers and pans of various food items in prep coolers and walk-in coolers in were observed to be unwrapped or uncovered.

12. In-use knives on a prep table were being stored under a wash cloth that is placed under a food container.

13. There were several containers in walk-in coolers and freezer that were stored on the floor.

14. Foods at prep station were subject to contamination by being stored in direct contact with soiled containers and/or under prep cooler shelves that are heavily soiled with mold, food debris, accumulations, dripping moisture.

15. Raw vegetables at prep were subject to potential contamination by being stored in a very dirty drawer.

16. Cooler handles were broken and replaced with a wood piece. Several shelves in service areas were lined with silver duct tape and were peeling and leaving a residue that is uncleanable. The area surrounding the dipper well at the ice cream station was not sealed and showed signs of severe wear.

17. Many coolers throughout the establishment were not equipped with an integral or permanently affixed temperature measuring device.

18. A stand up cooler and a and prep cooler with fruit and vegetables/salad items was not holding cold temperatures properly was not maintained in good repair.

19. Non-food contact surfaces of prep coolers and food storage areas throughout thenestablishment were heavily soiled with food debris, mold, grease, etc. The walk-in cooler was mold growing in it.

20. Food plates, utensils and other food service items were improperly stored in the basement under leaking waste lines. Clean and wrapped utensils were stored near a dirty bin of dishes. Clean plates were stored under a cutting board at the grill station and were observed to have liquids and food debris on them.

21. The sewage lines in a storage room in the basement were not maintained in good repair and were leaking water/possible sewage onto the floor and settling under floor tiles and into catch pans.

22. A drain hole in floor with several wastewater drain lines leading into it underneath a prep cooler in kitchen was severly plugged up with sludge, wastes and other sewage and was not able to drain or be cleaned properly.

23. The grease receptacle in the alley was observed to have the lid open and had an excessive amount of grease and food debris in and around the receptacle.

24. There were several areas in food prep kitchen or service areas floor tiles are missing, broken, or are in poor condition and need replacing.

25. Lights located in food prep kitchen and in ware-washing station hallway were not shatter resistant and were not covered.

26. The walls and floors and ceiling under and behind equipment in the kitchen and food prep areas and hand-washing sink behind bar were are heavily soiled with grease, food deposits, dirty utensils and food-related items, dust from exhaust/fan.
