1 Dead In Crash On Layton Avenue After Greenfield Police Pursuit

A car crashed and caught fire near 13th Street and Layton after a police pursuit Tuesday morning and the driver died, police said.

MILWAUKEE, WI — A 38-year-old Milwaukee man died in a car crash in the 1100 block of West Layton Avenue in Milwaukee around 2 a.m. Tuesday after a Greenfield police pursuit, according to a news release from the Milwaukee Police Department.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a bridge abutment, causing the vehicle to catch fire, Milwaukee police said. Greenfield police said officers started a pursuit of the vehicle near 27th Street and Howard Avenue, CBS 58 reported.

Police ended the pursuit near 20th Street and Layton and officers soon found the sedan crashed in the road near 13th Street and Layton Avenue, according to footage and reports.

Squad footage from Greenfield police showed the moment one officer saw a sedan speed by on the opposite side of a divided highway. The officer turned his vehicle around and took chase around 1:38 a.m.

One police car reached speeds of up to 100 mph as it chased the sedan, before the chase was terminated, squad camera footage showed.

A Greenfield officer found the sedan crashed and debris scattered across the roadway around 1:41 a.m. Flames sparked in the front of the car, and an officer used a fire extinguisher before other authorities arrived at the scene, squad footage showed.

The footage did not show the moment the car crashed. More information was not immediately available.

Milwaukee police said they are investigating the fatal crash.

The man who died in the crash was the only person in the sedan, according to police.
