Tesla Proposes Installing Car Superchargers At Greenfield Meijer Lot

GREENFIELD, WI — Electric automaker Tesla is eyeing a Meijer parking lot in Greenfield as the next site of several superchargers, according to documents from the city's plan commission.

The company proposed installing a supercharger station in the grocery store's lot at 5800 West Layton Avenue. Currently, the company has two supercharger stations in the greater Milwaukee area — one in Oak Creek and another in Menomonee Falls, according to Tesla's website.

There are also several "destination chargers" in the Milwaukee area, but those charge electric vehicles slower than superchargers do, according to Autotrader.com.

The chargers in Greenfield would be open 24/7, and only for Tesla vehicles. Payments would be handled through the Tesla app, plan commission documents said.

Sixteen parking stalls in the lot would be converted into 12 Tesla superchargers, one of which would be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, plan commission documents said. Three parking spots at the store would be lost.

City staff noted they recommend a security camera be installed near the chargers because of the possibility of people trying to steal wiring in the stations.

The proposal still has to pass approval from the Greenfield Common Council.
