Two Local Cyclists Competed in Chequamegon 40

The race, held in Wisconsin, is considered the Boston Marathon of mountain biking.

Two local bicycle riders competed in the Chequamegon 40, often referred to as the “Boston Marathon of mountain biking,” Sept. 15.

The 40-mile, mass start off-road bicycle race begins in downtown Hayward, Wis., and ends in the Telmark Resort in Cable, Wis.

Along the way, cyclists ride over the famed American Birkebeiner ski trail, forest roads, snowmobile trails and other wooded lanes.

Each year 1,850 participants are selected for the race.

This year, two riders from Greenfield participated. David Ziemer, 41, finished 25th of 310 in his age group of 40-44-year-olds in 2 hours, 26 minutes. He was 134th overall.

Also, Mark Hanson, 32, was 70th of 151 30-34-year-olds in 2:46:27.
