Waterspouts Possible Over Lake Michigan Thursday And Friday

The National Weather Service urges boaters and visitors to the lake's coast to use caution after waterspouts were spotted on Wednesday.

LAKE MICHIGAN — The National Weather Service is warning boaters and visitors to Lake Michigan's coast to be wary of the risk of waterspouts on Thursday and Friday.

In a weather briefing, the NWS said waterspouts are possible in the latter part of the week and are most likely to be seen in open waters.

According to the International Center for Waterspout Research, the Great Lakes had 29 confirmed waterspouts and funnels on Wednesday. Photos of two of the waterspouts over Lake Michigan were pictured online.

According to the NWS, waterspouts can occur during both fair and stormy weather. Spouts associated with severe thunderstorms can move onshore, leading the weather service to issue a tornado warning.

Fair weather waterspouts generally dissipate when they make landfall, the NWS said.

The Weather Service's forecast calls for slight chances of storms in Southeast Wisconsin Thursday afternoon with an overnight frost advisory. The possibility of frost continues Friday and Sunday night.
