'Heinous': Multiple Shots Fired During Funeral At Racine Cemetery

Racine Mayor Cory Mason instructed police to enforce the city's juvenile curfew ordinance through the weekend, he said.

RACINE, WI — Multiple shots were fired at Graceland Cemetery in Racine just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. Police confirmed two people were injured in the shooting, according to reports.

Racine Mayor Cory Mason called Thursday's shooting during a funeral "a new low for these perpetrators of violence in our community."

Reports initially said multiple people were shot. A funeral was going on for Da'Shontay L. King when the shots rang out, Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home & Crematory confirmed to TMJ4.

Police fatally shot King in Racine in May, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The Racine officer who shot 37-year-old King after a chase has since been placed on administrative leave and an investigation was launched, the DOJ said.

"The violence has got to stop!" Mason said in a statement posted to Facebook Thursday evening. "Revenge is not the answer. Ending gun violence is the top priority of the police department and my administration."

Mason called the cemetery shooting "heinous," "while a family was already mourning the loss of a loved one." The mayor's full statement was posted on Facebook.

Information from authorities about what exactly happened at Graceland Cemetery, and further details about a search for a suspect or possible arrests, were limited into Thursday evening.

The Journal Times reported casings could be seen in the area of the cemetery Thursday afternoon and witnesses told the newspaper they ran when they heard shots. Some reporters spotted a white casket as police searched the area near the cemetery.

A video posted to Facebook appears to show the moment shots rang out in the midst of the funeral service, The Journal Times reported. The video showed people dropping to the ground, screaming out.

Ascension All Saints Hospital near the cemetery was placed on lockdown after the shooting, a spokesperson for the hospital told Journal Times.

Mason said he requested more resources to support violence prevention from the governor and attorney general. He also instructed police to actively enforce the city's juvenile curfew ordinance through the weekend.

Police asked the public to avoid the area around Graceland Cemetery because of a "critical incident" around 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Graceland Cemetery is located near Graceland Boulevard, Lathrop Avenue and Osborne Boulevard in Racine.
