Drivers Be Safe: Warning Period Expires with Click It or Ticket

This holiday weekend means law enforcement crack downs on alcohol, speeding and seat belt usage. Oh, and pay attention to the speed limit changes on Highway H.

Sturtevant police will be out and about this weekend helping enforce the traditional "Click It or Ticket" holiday weekend crack down, including on Highway H where speed limits have recently changed.

"Click It or Ticket" covers speed and drunk driving enforcement as well as seat belt compliance. 

New speed limits on Highway H between Braun Road and Highway 11 changed May 18, taking drivers from 55- to 45- to 35-miles-per-hour leading up to the intersection of Highway H and Durand Avenue.

"We've been issuing warnings because we understand it takes drivers some time to get used to the change," Sturtevant Police Chief Sean Marschke told trustees Tuesday. "But with the holiday weekend and the 'Click It or Ticket' program, we will begin issuing citations."

Drivers aren't being safe as they approach the intersection, Marschke added, perhaps getting impatient and passing slower drivers. This could be a significant safety issue next year when .

"I think we should talk to Racine County about making that stretch of Highway H no passing," he said. "When UNFI opens next year, traffic is going to increase and this could become a bigger safety concern."

The village does have "Reduced Speed Ahead" signs, and Village President Steve Jansen asked the highway department to make sure those get installed.
