Observe Memorial Day in Racine
Monday, May 27, is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.
The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.
So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

For those who prefer something traditional to honor the fallen, place wreaths or flowers at war memorials or grave sites. Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant residents can purchase wreaths or flowers at Milaeger's, Borzynski's Farm & Floral Market, Stein Gardens & Gifts, Blains Farm & Fleet, Hobby Lobby Creative Center, Dollar Tree, Party City, Meteor, Michaels, Dollar General, Target, or Kmart.
Many villages, towns and cities host Memorial Day parades attended by a host of community members and civic groups. You can also grab your folding chair and flag and attend a parade at 10 a.m. at West Boulevard and Washington Avenue, which is put on by the Racine Area Veterans Council. The parade will end with a memorial ceremony at Graceland Cemetery's Veterans Memorial, shortly after 11 a.m.

Mingle with friends as marching bands, fire trucks, Boy and Girl Scouts, veterans, sports teams, and police and firefighters proceed ceremoniously through the town. Don’t forget to wave your flag.
Swimming is a viable option as well. Communities typically open the gates to pools or beaches at the end of May. Dig out your swim gear and a good book and head over for a dip. Pack plenty of snacks and have a picnic.
Don't forget the Beachside Oasis, 100 Kewaunee Street, will host live music on Memorial Day weekend, according to the Journal Times.
Acts include Roger and Friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday; Fall Hazard from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday; The Mania from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and Mean Jake from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday.
Remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-mast until noon.
