Police in Racine early Monday exchanged gunfire with a driver who fled from a traffic stop, authorities said.
RACINE, WI — A shootout between police and a suspect in Racine early Monday morning led to the suspect's death, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
Officers from Mount Pleasant were called for shots fired late Sunday and a couple hours later Racine officers stopped a car, according to the DOJ news release. When police stopped the car, the driver ran and hid in tall grass in the 1800 block of Clayton Avenue, the DOJ release said.
It was around 12:30 a.m. that officers commanded the suspect to emerge from the tall grass, but the suspect did not follow orders and started shooting at officers who then shot back, the DOJ said. The suspect was struck and determined dead at the scene, though no police were injured.
