Racine Unified School District: Educators Credit Union Opens Branch Inside Horlick High School

Educators Credit Union opened a new high school branch inside Horlick High School Jan. 28. The branch will give students direct access to open accounts, make small withdrawals and deposits, use the on-site ATM and learn how to independently manage their finances. 

In addition, the Academies of Racine - Horlick branch will be entirely student-run, giving students in the business pathway hands-on knowledge of operating a financial cooperative. Students are responsible for running day-to-day branch operations, cash handling, marketing initiatives and educating members on the products and services offered. 

“At Educators Credit Union, we believe in helping young members start off their financial journeys on the right foot,” said Victor Frasher, director of community engagement at Educators Credit Union. “The high school branches give students an opportunity to gain real-world work experience and build strong financial foundations. We are thrilled to have all three academies in Racine operating their own branch of Educators.”

Work to transform the space from a dark storage closet to a welcoming, bright space started in October. The branch also now houses a school store where all the apparel is designed by students. But that’s not all students created.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Educators Credit Union recognized and awarded a $250 cash prize to the Horlick freshman who submitted the winning Horlick High School debit card design. It’s available to Educators Credit Union members now! 

A shout to Horlick’s culinary pathway students is also in order. The students provided sweets and treats at the ribbon cutting celebration for the Horlick ECU Branch.
