Jansen Re-elected Sturtevant Village President

Sturtevant voters cast more ballots for incumbent President Steve Jansen than Trustee John Johnson.

Sturtevant residents decided Tuesday that they like Steve Jansen in the top spot.

Voters also decided they like having incumbents Chris Larsen and Chris Wright on the board, and that Johnson could keep his seat as well. Former Trustee Daryl Lynaugh ran to regain the seat he lost to Jayme Hoffman in 2012.

Jansen was running for his sixth term as president after two terms as a village trustee. Johnson ran for both village president and for re-election as a trustee.

Jansen said after he was called with the results that he's glad residents agree that village leadership is taking Sturtevant in the right direction.

"I'm very humbled and gratified that the people recognize that we've been doing a good job, and we will continue to do a good job," he said. "We are heading in the right direction."

Johnson was not surprised at the results, saying he felt from the beginning that he had a better chance at getting re-elected as a trustee.

"I didn't like my odds at beating Steve for president, and I will not do this half-way again. If I do this again, I'll do it with the right attitude and energy the position deserves," he said. "I like being a trustee and feel like I have a lot to contribute so I feel good about retaining my seat."

Voters cast ballots at a rate of about 21 percent; 759 out of 3,500 registered voters turned out Tuesday.

"We had about what we thought we would," said Village Clerk/Interim Administrator Mary Cole. "Traffic was steady with just a few periods where we had a break to process the absentee ballots."

Larsen expressed his thanks after the results were read at the close of voting.

"I am humbled by the support of the citizens of the village, and I look forward to representing them for the next two years," he said. "We have a lot of work to do.
