Village Food And Liquor's License To Sell Booze Suspended

Patrons won't be able to buy alcohol from the Village Food & Liquor Mart, 8929 Durand Ave., for 30 days starting August 16 because the Village of Sturtevant suspended their liquor license.

The reason: employees at the store sold booze to minors during a compliance check done by the Sturtevant Police Department for the second time this year. This also isn't the first year the business has sold alcohol to minors. Employees at the store failed a compliance check twice in 2008, said village trustee Chris Larsen.

"Because this was the second year they failed both of the compliance checks, we could have revoked their license for 10 to 90 days, but we're trying to work with these businesses," Larsen said.

During a meeting with the Village of Sturtevant held last night, Village Food and Liquor Mart owner Ashvinkumar Shah did not contest the Village's allegations and entered into a voluntary agreement where he opted not to sell liquor for 30 days.

The Mobile gas station, 8920 Durand Avenue, also failed the compliance check. However, that was their only violation since 2008, said village administrator Mary Cole.
