Police: Warrant Issued for Man Who Led Police on 100 MPH Chase

A Racine County judge issued a warrant Thursday for a Kenosha man who is suspected of driving the van police followed at speeds reaching 100 mph.

The man police say led them on a chase that got up to 100 mph now has a warrant out for his arrest because he missed his court date Thursday.

Eric Johnson, 26, of Kenosha, is facing a single charge in Racine County Circuit Court for fleeing/eluding an officer. If convicted, he faces up to 3-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, at 1:10 a.m. on April 9, Johnson was driving a white van going west on Taylor Ave from Lathrop Avenue toward Meachem Road when a Mount Pleasant police officer was behind him on regular patrol. The officer ran Johnson's plate and it came back that Johnson's license was suspended.

Both vehicles stopped at the intersection of Lathrop and Meachem for a red light; Johnson in the left turn lane to go south on Meachem and the MPPD officer in the center lane to continue driving west. Without warning, Johnson suddenly excelerated into the turn despite the light remaining red, police say.

The officer immediately activated lights and siren and went into pursuit. Johnson not only didn't stop, he kept increasing his speed. Police continued to follow Johnson as he drove through Kenosha County - as far south as Highway E - until speeds were up to 100 mph and an MPPD Sergeant called off the chase.
