A New Week, A New Attitude?

After two weeks of verbally beating each other up, it's time to take a breath and remember we all have to live in the same community.

My mom always reminded me to conduct myself as if she were standing over my shoulder. It was good advice then, and remains so.

Decency is simple, really: Do unto others as you would have done to you. Don't assume you know someone without really getting to talk to them, and more importantly listen to them. And a personal favorite: God gave people two ears and one mouth for a reason.

Frankly, I have no idea why disagreement has to become so ridiculously juvenile. I've heard from all camps in the past few weeks, and no matter what side of what issue people stand on, the question is the same: what has happened to people that they can't just agree to disagree?

Muskego has made news for all of the wrong reasons, and it's been less about the issues than it is about the lengths people are going to in order to make the case for their side. Tattling and anonymous commenting that has gotten more personal than substantive have been the hallmark of our site and throughout the city. Again I have to state if your argument is that the person you disagree with is a 'moron,' 'stupid,' or a 'freak,' you have no solid argument to make. If you're so passionate, at least step out from the veil of fake names and show a little courage.

It's Sunday. Palm Sunday. Take a breath, folks, and in the spirit of the week to come, remember that the issues you have been tearing each other apart over are really small in the vast configuration of things. Vote for your candidate of choice on Tuesday and if your neighbor votes for the other guy, halleluia for that and our system of government that allows us to legally vote for - and brace yourselves, recall - candidates. (I know...recalls have gotten out of hand, but they are not illegal.)
