DOT program encourages kids to read about transportation

Program supports state’s Read to Lead initiative

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) today announced a new Transportation Reading Challenge for kids in support of the state’s Read to Lead initiative.

The program encourages children up to age 10 to read 10 books about transportation. After completing a reading ticket that documents the books have been read, participants will be eligible to win small prizes that promote safety or a possible ride-along with a state trooper.

“The challenge provides a reading goal and gives kids a fun way to learn about the importance of transportation in their lives,” said WisDOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb.

Participants will read eight books that involve various types of transportation, including travel by car, bicycle, truck, bus, boat, train, airplane or walking. Two additional books can involve any type of transportation – anything from space travel to a hot air balloon.
