Craig, Lazich Speak Out Against Roundabout Along I-43

Lawmakers weigh in on construction of roundabout at Big Bend exit along I-43.

Rep. David Craig (R-Vernon) and State Senator Mary Lazich have sent a letter to Wisconsin's Secretary of Transportation expressing opposition to the proposed construction of roundabouts at the entrance and exit of the Highway 164/I-43 intersection.

Muskego motorists accessing I-43 along Racine Avenue have adapted to roundabouts at those on ramps for about 4 years already, but Big Bend and Vernon public opposition have prompted the request to consider other options.

"It is our understanding that installing roundabouts is one of the Department of Transportation’s options for the entrance and exit at that intersection," the letter stated.

"Our opposition reflects the position of the boards of the Village of Big Bend and the Town of Vernon, as well as a number of constituents who have contacted our offices in opposition to the proposed roundabouts at this location," Craig and Lazich wrote.

The Big Bend Village Board previously approved a resolution opposing the roundabout in a vote on March 4, 2010, and the Town of Vernon Board approved a similar resolution in June of that same year.

"We believe deference needs to be given to the positions of the municipalities most impacted by the proposed roundabouts," they told Gottlieb.

Patch has requested further information from Senator Lazich's office regarding the similarities to the Racine Avenue roundabouts, and have not received a response yet. We will update the story when we do.
