Former PTO Treasurer Avoids Prison Time for Embezzlement

Rick Hahne was facing as much as six years in prison and $10,000 in fines, but gets 18 months probation for taking PTO funds.

A Muskego man who had been the treasurer of the Muskego Elementary PTO and was charged with theft was sentenced on Friday in Waukesha County circuit court.

As part of a plea deal, Hahne pled guilty to two counts of theft of movable property, and a third count was dismissed. Each count would have carried a six month sentence for Huber work release, but they were stayed in exchange for 18 months of probation.

He was confronted by the PTO board in Dec. 2011 and admitted to “borrowing” $7,900 from the account. He then wrote a check to the organization for $8,500, but still owes $888 to the organization.

Hahne stated that he took the money because he lost two jobs within 18 months and needed money to pay for his utilities and children.

The court decided on Friday that it would allow for early release after 12 months if all conditions, including $1,768 in restitution to the Muskego Elementary PTO, were met. Hahne will also be responsible to maintain full time work or schooling, write a letter of apology to the PTO and pay court costs.
