Haunchyville Is Not A Home For Axe Murderers Or Little People, Police Say

If you've lived in Muskego for a while, you've probably heard about a place called Haunchyville off of Mystic Drive. 

Stories have been handed down over generations about the area allegedly being inhabited by little people and an axe murderer. There have been movie trailers about the area, the place has been featured by Weird Wisconsin, and creepy rhymes have been posted on YouTube. And every few days on Twitter, you'll see youth talking about going down there.

But officials from the Muskego Police Department said the story is a hoax.

Lt. Dave Constantineau, of the Muskego Police Department, said he grew up in Muskego, but had never heard of Haunchyville until he started working for the Police Department. But the myth has been around for at least 60 years.

“There are rumors about an axe murderer living there and little people living in little houses,” he said.

But the story is just that, a story and it’s not true, Constantineau said.

“While most Muskego kids know it’s a myth, kids from the surrounding areas continue to go down there and it drives the homeowners nuts,” he said.

But now that the area has been built up, there aren’t a whole lot of kids going down there anymore. However, several years ago when the homes were being built Constantineau remembers writing a number of tickets. Some kids were just curious; some just want to find someplace to drink.

“But the point we want to drive home, there are no little people there, no axe murders… just nice taxpaying people who want to live in peace,” he said.

No trespassing signs are posted throughout the area and the police department has taken a tough stance on the issue. If they catch you trespassing, you’d better have some pretty deep pockets because the trespassing ticket carries a pretty hefty $334.50 fine.

“If we catch, you are going to get a ticket,” he said.
